About Pinched Nerves
A pinched nerve is a very common problem and can occur in several different places in the body. When too much pressure is applied to a nerve the end result is pain, weakness, numbness and tingling. The cause of these symptoms is the disruption of the nerve’s function. This increased pressure can come from many different sources. The main sources of pinched nerves are tendons, muscles, bone and cartilage.
One of the most common areas to have problems from a pinched nerve is the lower back. An injury to one of the disks in the lower back can cause pain that radiates down one or both legs. This type of pain is called sciatica. It gets its name from the sciatic nerve that run down the back of both legs. The sciatic nerve can get pinched by the injured disk thus causing pain along the nerve pathways.
Another common pinched nerve is in the wrist. The most common nerve injury to the wrist area is called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The median nerve is affected in this area. The pressure on the nerve causes pain, numbness and weakness in the hand and wrist that can radiate up the arm.
A physical examination by a chiropractic physician is usually all that is needed to diagnose a pinched nerve. The chiropractor will perform a number of physical examination tests in order to locate the source of the pain and pinched nerve. The physician will also do a complete health history and possibly an occupational history. The chiropractor will want to know when your pain started and if there was a particular injury that caused the pain. The chiropractor will then make his/her recommendations based upon the information gathered and the examination. Further testing such as a MRI or X-ray may be necessary as well.
A chiropractor’s approach is unique because it takes a look at the person as a whole instead of looking at just one aspect of the person. Spinal adjustment is the main form of treatment that the chiropractor uses in treating pinched nerves. This is done by using his hands or other instruments to apply direct pressure to the pinched nerve. This adjustment relaxes tight muscles and reduces the constriction of the affected nerves by promoting proper alignment of the spine. Chiropractors may also use other treatments to ease pain such as massage and electrical stimulation.
